Twenty-Nine year old Canadian Robert Strauss began making music professionally over a decade ago. Playing keyboards and drums as a child and settling on guitar in his early teens. Robert began his musical career like most, playing in high school rock bands eventually leading his group Life to a major recording deal in Canada. Robert’s goals have since remained unchanged, focusing on writing and producing his own, original material. Keeping in mind the guiding principles of making quality music with soul, Robert continues his musical journey into this second decade.

To quote Robert: “I began to explore the electronic side of making music, which I hadn’t done since I was very young. I realized that there were galaxies of undiscovered music out there, the vast majority of which were quite beyond definition or category. To me the underground dance music scene finds us at exactly where our cultural pulse emanates. There is just so much great music out there, largely from independent labels, that it’s hard to keep up.” Further more, it is common knowledge that major labels do not heavily back dance music, however I love the freedom that this genre affords me. Creating music without limits is worth all the money in the world. When I started in this field I felt that going off in my own direction and making music there was little or no audience for might be completely ridiculous but it was only then that I began to realize I was trailblazing a path towards something totally new and unique.’

Operating from his studio in Toronto, Canada, Robert’s music is `just starting to break out internationally with recent releases on Osunlade’s Yoruba label as well as collaborations with Baatin from Slum Village.  His stunning debut album is scheduled for release here on Freerange in May 2005 . Pigeon-holing phrases like broken beat, nu jazz or future soul will inevitably get bandied around. Whatever… a good tune is a good tune, one that is to last the test of time. And you can guarantee Robert Strauss is making them!
