Only Freak is comprised of Jean Vanesse and Thomas Sohet, both born, raised and still residing in Belgium. Over the past few years, the duo have notched up a serious discography and remixography using both Only Freak and their Spirit Catcher guise and have had a string of outstanding tracks released on labels such as Moodmusic, Missive, 2020 Vision, Winding Road, Silver Network, Polyphonics and of course here on Freerange.
As the son of a sound engineer, Jean entered very quickly into the world of music and soon learnt to love the muffled sounds of the recording studio. By the age of twelve, he had learnt drums and percussion before moving on to 'computer assisted' music. Aged seventeen, with the aid of some analogue synths, he had produced, recorded and released his first track. Since then, Jean's productions have multiplied under various guises and after finishing his sound engineer class, he moved on to open his own professional recording studio - Studio Bis, in the summer of 2000.
His partner in crime is Thomas Sohet, a highly skilled keyboard player who honed his skills in numerous respected funk bands before hooking up with Jean through a chance meeting and discovering their shared passion of all things disco. Thus, a deep, futuristic, electro and house influenced sound is born. A melting pot flavoured by the black, American funk of heroes such as Herbie Hancock, George Duke, D’train, Zapp, and Chic.
